More Adults Want to Live Child-Free

And they are equally as happy as the adults with children.

Is life better without kids?

For many couples, one of the most exciting days of their lives is to meet their offspring.

However, in a recent study in the USA, it appears that opinions on having children are changing. In fact, the research shows that twenty-five percent of adults have no desire to become parents.

Psychologists of Michigan State University studied the characteristics and satisfaction of adults who do not want to have children and revealed that a quarter of American adults are satisfied to be child-free.

Jennifer Watling Neal and Zachary Neal, both associate professors in MSU’s department of psychology, wanted to discover the differences between child-free parents and non-parents.

According to them, non-parents include “not-yet-parents” (those who are still planning to have kids) and people who cannot have kids due to infertility.

“Most studies haven’t asked the questions necessary to distinguish ‘child-free’ individuals — those who choose not to have children — from other types of nonparents,” Jennifer Watling Neal says.
